At EMTG we are always finding new an innovative ways to improve our educational products. Over the past months the COVID-19 pandemic has proven challenging in the delivery of healthcare education with the reduction in student clinical rotations. Some rudimentary courses require no clinical interaction at all leaving the students to practice on lifeless manikins or each other! Often these simulations are run "by-the-book" as though every patient interaction will follow a script leading to a simple diagnosis. After all, don't all MI's present with chest pain? What do you mean all asthma does not wheeze and all that wheezes is not asthma? I mention but a few. This where over 700 ReelDx video case studies come in.
In the third edition of AMLS, students learn to recognize and manage common medical crises through realistic case-based scenarios that challenge students to apply their knowledge to highly critical patients. The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, first impression, history, interactive group discussion on differential diagnosis and potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The third edition AMLS library of patient simulations offers students an opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to a variety of patient presentations. Additional features include patient simulation monitor images and ECGs provided by iSimulate, to enhance students’ experience.
The course utilizes the AMLS textbook and course manual and covers the following topics:
Exposure to hazardous materials
AMLS is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anaesthetists and physicians. AMLS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.
The following AMLS course formats are offered to address the needs of providers:
Provider Course: 16-hour course for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and physicians. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of completion, a wallet card recognizing them as AMLS providers for 4 years, and 16 hours of CAPCE credit. This course may be offered as a classroom course, or a hybrid course where students take 8 hours of the course online followed by 8 hours in the classroom.
Online Modules: 8-hour online module that covers the didactic portion of the course
During the day spent at the training centre for the psychomotor skills section of the course students in small groups will be presented with a selection of real patient video cases as well as patient simulations. The following is an example of how the use of real patient video can be utilised in discussion groups to bolster learning and critical thinking.
Bringing Real World Experience Into the Classroom The ReelDx video case library contains nearly 700 individual cases featuring a wide cross-section of real patients with real symptoms being seen by real healthcare providers in a variety of settings. Each case features an anchoring video showing the initial provider-patient interaction. In addition, each case contains:
Patient vitals & demographics
