This is a great piece of work by Mike McEvoy. Great review of the Dreyfus model of Skill Acquisition. Interesting to note that according to this model the best preceptors are those with 2-3 years of experience and have achieved conscious competence. With the current trend to move to a Masters degree as soon as possible post HCPC registration one wonders how often Paramedics reach even competency never mind proficiency or expertise before climbing up the academic alphabet soup ladder. Could this be hindering the Paramedic profession rather than furthering it? Just a thought.
